The Brabo choke is a specialized gi submission often executed from side control or top half-guard. Named after Leonardo Vieira, who popularized it in the early 2000s, this technique involves using the opponent's gi to apply the choke. Start by gripping the bottom part of the opponent's gi, ideally with a cupping grip. Pull the gi downwards and horizontally towards your shoulder and across their neck, keeping it tight. Trap their arm using a sleeve grip, bringing it up and across their neck to complete the lock. With the opponent's arm pinned, bring your shoulder down with significant force into their shoulder joint while continuing to drive forward. This constricting movement significantly tightens the grip against their neck, cutting off blood flow to the brain similarly to a D'arce choke and forcing a submission.
