The north-south position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, when well maintained, is used by top-level fighters and users. It creates transitions to extremely dangerous and very secure control over an opponent, making it very potent. In the most general terms, the north/south position means having control of an opponent while facing either above or underneath their body, usually along the plane that bisects their shoulders down along the plane and towards their groin, which completely removes their back-based protection. To start transitioning correctly, the attacker must attempt a strong torso/hip area connection with good upper and lower control, making use of strategic limbs and positional support in key pressure points. This provides a great source of strength when held properly on your opponent's weak points. Controlling movement with grips is useful during this positioning. The various methods for a correct form and grip allow you access to submissions and other positional moves. The north south position may also be referred to as '69' or '69 position'.
