Hadaka jime

Alternate names: Rear naked choke, Sleeper hold

Technique Description

Hadaka Jime, commonly referred to as the 'Rear Naked Choke' (RNC) or 'Sleeper Hold,' is one of the most effective and widely used submission techniques in grappling and combat sports. It involves encircling the opponent's neck with your arms, constricting the carotid arteries, and cutting off blood flow to the brain. To perform Hadaka Jime, establish a position behind the opponent, with your chest against their back. Reach one arm around the opponent's neck, placing your forearm against their throat. Your other arm reaches behind the opponent's head and grips your own bicep or forearm, creating a tight seal around their neck. To finish the choke, squeeze your arms together while driving your chest forward, constricting the carotid arteries and cutting off blood flow to the brain. This can cause rapid unconsciousness if applied correctly. The rear naked choke is highly effective because it does not rely on gi grips and can be applied in various situations, both standing and on the ground. It is a staple of many grappling arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Mixed Martial Arts, and is often considered one of the most fundamental and important submissions to learn.
