Technique Description

Harai Makikomi, known as the 'Sweeping Wrap-Around Throw,' is a sacrifice throw that combines the sweeping action of Harai Goshi with a wrapping or winding motion to take the opponent down. It is typically executed by stepping across the opponent's body, sweeping their supporting leg, and simultaneously wrapping your arm around their body while falling to the mat. To perform Harai Makikomi, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. Step across their body with your lead leg and position your other leg behind their supporting leg, similar to Harai Goshi. Use your leg to sweep their leg from the inside while simultaneously wrapping your arm around their body and falling to your side or back. The combination of the leg sweep, the wrapping motion, and the sacrifice action creates a powerful takedown. It is considered an advanced variation of the harai goshi. The harai makikomi may also be considered illegal under a modern ruleset.
