Kataha Jime, often translated as 'Single Wing Choke,' is a choking technique that involves using one arm to control the opponent's head and neck while the other arm applies the choking pressure. It is typically executed from the back or side control position and is known for its effectiveness in both gi and no-gi grappling. To perform Kataha Jime, establish a position where you can wrap one arm around the opponent's neck, with your forearm against their throat. Your other arm reaches under the opponent's armpit and grips your own bicep or forearm, creating a tight seal around their neck. To finish the choke, squeeze your arms together while driving your shoulder into the back of the opponent's head, constricting their carotid arteries and cutting off blood flow to the brain. The arm under the opponent's armpit helps to prevent them from escaping and adds to the choking pressure. It's most often applied from back control but can be used from other positions. In modern grappling competition it is relatively rare but was once common.
