Technique Description

Katate Jime, commonly referred to as the 'Single Hand Choke,' is a choking technique that involves using one hand to apply pressure to the opponent's neck, constricting the carotid arteries and cutting off blood flow to the brain. While it can be performed with two hands, the name emphasizes the use of a single hand to execute the choke. To perform Katate Jime, establish a grip on the opponent's collar or lapel with one hand, positioning your thumb inside the collar and your fingers outside. Use your other hand to reinforce the grip or to control the opponent's posture. To execute the choke, rotate your gripping hand outwards while simultaneously pulling the collar tight against the opponent's neck. This action applies pressure to the carotid arteries, causing a blood choke. The other hand can be used to assist in the choking action or to prevent the opponent from defending. Katate jime may be applied from various positions but is most effective as an attack from the back, or from the front in a standing position. The katate jime is less frequently applied in no-gi as the lack of grips make the technique harder to achieve. As such, techniques like the previously mentioned 'rear naked choke' have replaced it in no-gi competition.
