Yoko gake

Alternate names: Side hook

Technique Description

Yoko Gake, known as the 'Side Hook,' is a sacrifice throw that involves hooking the opponent's leg from the side while dropping your body weight to take them down. It is often used as a counter to an opponent's forward movement or as a follow-up to a failed throw attempt. To perform Yoko Gake, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. As they step forward or attempt to off-balance you, quickly drop to your side while hooking your leg around the opponent's near leg, typically at the ankle or lower calf. Simultaneously, use your upper body grips to pull the opponent forward and sideways, disrupting their balance. The combination of the leg hook, the pulling action, and the sacrifice motion creates a swift and effective takedown. Although it is a 'sacrifice' technique it should not involve risking yours, or your opponents, safety to perform. This can be mitigated by good instruction and safe practice. Similarly to techniques already mentioned this is effectively a sweeping technique while also dropping to the ground.
